SCOPE AND TOPICS OF THE WORKSHOP

5G emerging services, such as Tactile Internet, metaverse, cloud gaming and remote driving are posing unprecedented requirements on both the mobile communication and computing capabilities of the mobile network infrastructure. Cloud computing and edge computing are introduced to the mobile network to fulfill the intensive computing needs. Edge computing with local progress is becoming increasingly important due to its great advantages of reducing the backhaul overload, data transmission delay and security and privacy protection. With the cloudification technologies expanded from the core network to radio access network (RAN), RAN becomes a native and cost effective edge computing platform which provides integrated communication and computing services. The cloud infrastructure does not only facilitate the virtualized/containerized network functions leading to faster network upgrade and network customization agility, but also enables resource sharing among the applications and 5G network functions. Furthermore, it offers fertile soil for artificial intelligence (AI), so that AI could be easily introduced for the network intelligence and automation. Meanwhile, the network connectivity and computing services would also be crucial for supporting the emerging pervasive AI applications. However, in the current network, computing and communication are usually designed separately. It is hard to achieve the full potential of the network for supporting the computing intensive services with stringent connection requirements. The deeper convergence of communication and computing is envisioned to speed up innovation on the network intelligence and unlock the growth opportunities beyond connectivity.

This workshop explores communication and computing integrated networks. The proposed half-day workshop is to bring together researchers and experts from academia and industry to share the latest challenges, technologies, solutions, techniques and fundamentals pertaining to this cutting-edge research topic.
